Five card draw used to be the first game of poker that most people learned. It has largely been replaced by hold’em because hold’em makes for better television. Five card draw does however continue to have a loyal following. People like it because it is a simple game to learn but one that requires an enormous amount of strategy.

There was a time when five card draw was by far the most popular variant of the game. It has fallen out of favor in recent years as hold’em has become more popular, largely because you can have more players in a hold’em game. Nevertheless there are still players that prefer five card draw, mainly because it is such a simple game to learn. One thing to keep in mind however is that although the basic rules are very simple the strategy required to be a good player can be very complicated.

A game of five card draw poker starts with an ante, each player puts an agreed amount into the pot and is then dealt five cards. Once each player has been dealt five cards there is a round of betting. After this round each player has the right to exchange up to three of their cards. After each player has changed their cards there is another round of betting. If at this point there is still more than one player in the game there is a showdown to determine the winner.

One of the things that makes five card draw so popular is that it allows for a lot of variations. One common variation is to make certain cards wild which increases the likelihood of a player getting a high hand. Another popular variation is to change the number of cards that can be exchanged, most common is to increase the number but some games will also reduce it to two. There are really no limits to the number of possible variations and many people will actually play several different variations in the course of one game. For example will use different wild cards with each hand.

Although five card draw is one of the simplest forms of poker to learn it is also one of the most difficult to master. The reason is that there are no community cards so you have no idea what your opponents may potentially have. This means that bluffing is far more important than it is in other variants of the game. Players really have to pay attention to the number of new cards each player takes to get a clue as to how good their hand is. This of course leads to bluffing as players will often take only one card even if they have a weak hand in order to make their opponent think they have a strong hand.

Although you will be hearing experts talking about numbers, the art of bluffing in poker is an integral part of the game. Bluffs bring in chips. Well at least if you are good at it.

When to bluff

You need to consider several factors before deciding if you really can pull a bluff off. You need to know the kind of game you are having, who is the weak player on the table who’s most likely to bite the bate, and also consider how other players see your playing style. Let us say you are a tight aggressive player, or someone who really plays good hands, then most likely players will give you credit and back down.

Table image

How others perceived you on the table is also very important. When you are a tight aggressive player you can use a wider range of hands to pull off a bluff. If you are a bit loose with your plays, there is a lesser chance that you will be called by other players when bluffing.

Pick the right target

Knowing how others play their cards is also critical. You have to be a radar and peak the weakest or most vulnerable in the pack. You need to look for someone who will play Aces in a snap and play a 7-2 in a blink. Someone who has a shorter stack is also more vulnerable from someone who has a deep stack. Players who limp into a play are also good targets for a bluff.

Remember that a bluff is still a calculated risk. You will learn as you go along.

The Check Raise is no doubt one of the most effective and strongest moves that you can take during a game of Texas Hold’em Poker. Some players look at it as a dishonest move and some card rooms may even have banned the check raise. No matter what, it is a very strong weapon that wins games.

Check-Raise is when you checked on what is to be laid on the poker table with the intention of pushing in more chips or raising when your opponent bets.

It is a very interesting strategy since you show some weakness to the other players by tapping on the table and checking but then you change gear and suddenly show some amount of strength. The nature of the tactic is basically why it is regarded as a very dishonest move. A check-raise is a good trap for an opponent.

A check-raise is very useful when you want to get some more money into the pot or bluffing other players out of the pot. The check raise also inject some good dynamics into your game and making you more unpredictable on the table.

A beginner will rarely use this so other players on the table will have an impression that you know how to play the game when you try to do a check raise. You can affect them mentally before they think of pushing off the pots.

The check raise is the strongest move you can take in a poker game. Remember that you need to be the first to act so you can do a check raise. You can’t call it a check raise if you are not the first. It will only be a raise in that scenario.

To pull off a good check raise you must be confident that you have a better hand than the other players, re-raise double the amount of the other player’s bet, the pot in hand should be small, and you must have somehow a drawing hand if you DON’T already have a strong made hand. Only very tight poker players can make this play as a bluff really.

Remember you need to project a very strong, aggressive raise to affect the game of your opponent. Try a sick check raise on your next game and see how you can use it to your advantage.

When you are on the poker table, there is a higher chance of boosting those chips stack when you play aggressive. This means that you do more of raising and betting than just calling and checking.

Being aggressive does not mean just pouring it all out. It means calculated aggression on the table to make everything work to your advantage. When you have a better card, better poker skills, or better position, there is no reason why you will not play aggressive.

Let us say that you have an Ace-King and the flop gives you King-Ten-Seven. You have a top pair and an excellent kicker but you might remain a bit hesitant especially when the flop comes with suited cards and your hand might just be broken by the turn. You need to protect your hand and be aggressive. If your opponent bets on you then you have to raise. The goal is to give your opponent a hard time with wrong odds on the pot. Don’t give them the opportunity to improve their hand.

Use aggressive Play to Buy Position

When you have good cards on your hand you must act aggressively to push other players out of position. This means that you can by the position during the pre-flop betting where there will be players acting after your call. Limping in will not do any good.

Earning free cards with aggressive poker play

When you play aggressive most likely other players on the table will perceive you as a loose player. Your opponents will most likely check on you first or some may often think that you are just bluffing. Act first and most likely they will check. You get your free card and extract more chips from your opponents.

Be paid off

When you play aggressively some players will take you as a light competition. They will think that you don’t have the best hand but still you play your cards. If they don’t believe you that you have excellent cards, you have a big chance of raking in their stack.

Like aggressive players: check out Sam Farha – a true superaggressive PLO and Hold’em player!

There are a number of variations to the popular card game poker:

Stud Horse Poker:
This variant, under Section 330 of the California statute was banned in the 19th century. Almost 6 decades later, it was declared that Stud horse poker was identical to stud poker and therefore, the ban was removed.

Oxford stud
Under this variant of poker, ever player receives downcards, community cards and upcards. There are many variants to this particular variation as the type of cards dealt as well as the number dealt can be modified.

However, the problem with this combination is that the decision to be taken which requires the player holding the best upcards to show his bets first in the beginning of each round. On the other hand, in the case of community card games, every round is initiated by the same player every time. According to Oxford stud, each individual player’s upcards are used for the purpose of establishing the order of the game.

To iniate the game, every individual player receives two downcards and a single upcard. The player who holds the lowest upcard initiates the betting.

As the game goes on in clockwise direction, after the conclusion of the first round, two community cards are placed on the board.

The second round is initiated by that player who holds the highest showing hand which consists of his upcard along with the two previously placed community cards. After the conclusion of this round, every individual player receives an upcard.

The third round is again initiated by that player who holds the highest hand.

Another community card, the third, is placed onto the board, thus initiating the last round. The betting is commenced by the player who holds the highest poker hand.

After the final round comes the showdown, wherein the player who holds the highest poker hand wins the game.

High Chicago or Low Chicago:
The variant High Chicago is also sometimes called Chicago. Under this variant, the player who holds the highest spade that is “in the hole”, wins part of the pot. In particular, he wins half the pot. On the other hand, conversely, the player who holds the lowest spade face down wins half the pot. Here, Ace of Spades is the lowest.

However, if a player who holds the highest hand also holds the highest or lowest spade facedown, then he is the recipient of the whole pot.

Follow the Queen
Under this variant, over the course of the game, when a player received a Queen as an up card, then the consequent card that the player receives is termed as the trailer. This card is wild as are the Queens.

As the game goes on, if the player receives another Queen as an upcard, then the consequent card that is dealt after this Queen is the new trailer as well as the new wild card. Naturally, the player holding the best poker hand wins.

Kuhn Poker:
This poker variant is played using a three card deck. It is usually played between two players.
